3 Things All Teachers Should Do Over The Summer
Ahhh summer vacation. I’d be lying to you if I told you I didn’t love those two glorious months. I also LOVE my job as a teacher, but nothing beats two months of having time away from school to recharge your teacher batteries. I find I’m a better teacher if I have that time away and I’m able to think through all the things I want to do differently.
Summer is the best time to recharge your teacher batteries
I used to teach summer school when I first started teaching. After the first summer of not teaching summer school, I told myself “I’m never teaching summer school again!” In my school district, summer school is all of June and so you end up having July off and back to school in August. It all goes by too fast!
Teaching is one of the hardest jobs there is
With the last few years we’ve had, I truly believe most people would agree that teaching is one of the hardest jobs there is. Parents who had to teach their children from home saw first hand the amazing things teachers were doing to keep their student’s attention while trying to teach content at the same time. Summer is a great time to take a break from teaching so you can remember why you got into teaching in the first place. I find that summer break allows me to think through things I want to change while also giving me back my energy to do it all over again in August.
Take time to enjoy the small moments
During the school year, we’re always in such a rush to get out the door. If you have an early contract time, it’s even worse. Couple that with not being a morning person, then forget about it! My contract time at my last school was 7:10! I’m lucky I’m a morning person, but it still doesn’t make it any easier if you want to work out, walk your dog or have to get kids ready for school too. Over the summer, take time to enjoy the small moments like having a cup of coffee on the patio and watching the sunrise. I find that summer allows me to be in the moment and for that, I’m truly grateful.
Start a tutoring business so you can work 1-1 with kids
One of my favorite things about being a teacher is building relationships with my students. With class sizes being huge, it can often feel tough to get that 1-1 connection with each student. At the end of the school year, you might even feel burnt out from having to meet the needs of all 32 of your students. That’s what I love about owning your own tutoring business. You get to work 1-1 with kids and get your teaching spark back. Results are seen quicker with 1-1 tutoring and you’ll love how effective you are when you’re able to just work with a small number of tutoring clients. Tutoring is the best teacher side-hustle there is. I’m able to tutor less than 10 hours a week and make $1,000 extra dollars a month just by tutoring a handful of kids. Learn more about how I do this as a full-time teacher in my free masterclass.
Combine your tutoring business with TPT products so you can make passive income all school year long
You’re likely already creating teaching resources for your classroom or tutoring business. Why not take your online tutoring business to the next level and create passive income all school year long? What if you could tutor less but earn more? Hear me out. I love tutoring, but as a full-time teacher, do you want to spend all your free evening time with a full client list? Or, would you rather tutor 1-2 days a week for just an hour or two and still meet your monthly income goals with your Teachers Pay Teachers store? Creating resources that sell will be life changing for your teacher business and your family. I teach this entire process inside of From Zero To Cha-Ching.
Just remember that growing your tutoring business takes time. If you're in it for the long game, not the short game, you'll start seeing milestones left and right.
Take time to enjoy your summer. Whether you want to start a tutoring business or just Netflix and chill, I’m here to support you!
